    Thank you for your video. Very interesting for me as bike mechanic. I do have a few questions I wonder if you know the answers to, which I don't find on the Pinion website. 1) Is the gear shift indexing done at the shifter or the gearbox? Gearbox would seem more reliable because it takes cable tension out of the equation. 2) Are the gear steps all really the same (eg, 17.7% for the 12-speed)? It seems this would be a hard arithmetic problem when multiplying the 4 gear ratios from stage 1 by the 3 ratios from stage 2. Even the most evenly spaced internally geared hubs from Shimano or Rohloff don't have the exact same steps throughout their range! If so, how did they achieve this? This may be a trade secret, or maybe just a tooth-counting exercise! Thank you.

    Hi, Tristan! I was wondering if You both considered the options of a Jones H Bar o similar ( BLB Drifter ), instead of the original flat bar. How do You feel during long day ride with the flat bar? I see you employ grips like Ergon, but I am curious if You ever tried the other models, especially during climbing...

    • @tristanbogaard
      @tristanbogaard 23 дні тому

      I did consider it, but wanted to stay as close to the base spec Outback as possible. The TT flat bar is fine for all-round use, but on long rides I sometimes miss a variety of hand positions. The right grips help with that, and the Ergon grips are fine for the job.

What are it downsides if any. 3. have you had problems with ventilation (I read this elsewhere) and have you used it in heavy rain and /or wind? Thanks in advance. Great video by the way. @tristanbogaard Місяць тому

      Great! We’ve used the Exogen 1 & 2 for a year and a half now and are very happy with the quality of the fabric and poles. Nothing has broken. A downside of the 2 is the lack of pockets on the ceiling, and for both the 1 and 2 the outer tent flap through which you enter / exit the tent could stick to the inner fabric when wet (and not properly pegged). No problems with ventilation luckily, and so far so good with heavy wind and rain. Overall, it’s the best tent I’ve had for bikepacking!

    I own a Riese&Müller ebike and have heard so many times from other R&M riders that their fairly new belt snapped. But also some have ridden way more than 15k km. This pinion motor changes things a bit. The the gearbox is before the belt drive. I suspect that it might put less strain on the belt. Especially when you use almost equal size chainring and coq. I am interested to see how well the belt fairs with this system. Also something to mention is that many of the R&M bikes that had a belt snap were also full suspension. So that might also play a role in the premature belt failure.

    • @tristanbogaard
      @tristanbogaard Місяць тому

      I’ve heard stories on snapped belts on e-bikes too and… I’m pretty sure it happens because people put way too much pressure on the belt by starting in a high gear (and letting the battery do all the hard work to get them up to speed). Like this, the tension can be immense. Best is to always try to be in the right gear for your speed - the MGU makes that super easy with automatic shifting and the Start.Select setting that puts you in a low gear once you stand still.

    Excellent review video. These combo of bike and drive is the perfect solution for bike travel for those of us that appreciate the assistance of motor assist. As an ebike tourer myself, an important thing that you didn’t really discuss is extended riding beyond the range of a single charge. I usually ride more miles in a day than a fully-charged battery allows, which requires bringing a second battery or re-charging during the day. My ebike (not the one you rode) does not recharge very fast, so my only option is to carry a second battery. But, if I am correct, the Pinion system charges pretty quickly, which should allow “topping off” during the day to extend any day’s range. That is VERY important for anyone considering using an ebike for touring or bikepacking. I suggest emphasizing this in a future video.

      Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll keep that in mind. Tout Terrain will offer a 500wh additional battery that can be used on the frame, giving a total of 1200wh available to the rider. That’s massive! Combined with the ~2h fast-charge time (which ages the batteries faster but is good while on a tour) it’s a fantastic combo.

    Top fiets, alleen nog een by Schulz zadelpen als optie en een backsweep handelbar voor meer confort op ruw terrein. Wel weinig opening tussen de spatborden en de wielen op modderig wegen kan dit wel vast lopen denk ik. Jammer dat de batterij er niet langs de boven kant uit gaat. Veel makkelijker en minder kans dat er vuil of opspattend water in kan geeft een langere levens duur bij de meeste nieuwe ebike gaan open vanboven of langs de zij kant. Deze video is een mooi staaltje dat bike packing met ebike mogelijk is voor een breder publiek en hoop dat het dezelfde weg opgaat zoals de e gravel bike waar het duidelijk zijn diensten al heeft bewezen..groetjes uit eindelijk droge België stijn

    Excellent run down on the Pamir. The controls are in a good position and being able to integrate your phone is genious. Being able to take the battery out of the bike is a must. The range is not quite as far as I would like. FYI looked up the Pinion MGU. 85 Nm torque and 1000 shifts after the battery is done. This would be a super bike for touring Europe or parts of the US. Maybe not crossing the Gobi desert, but still a lot of places to see.

    Hello, The Pinion system remains a must and the belt transmission marks a turning point. But this e-bike is nonsense on many crucial points: First of all, you must avoid any disc brake system which remains anti-mechanical, easily blocks the wheels and is the primary cause of often serious falls. Discs breaks involves fragile rims that crack (very quickly) and spokes that break. All this will force you to change the wheels every year and de-pending on use several times a year in addition to spending a lot of money on the maintenance of the disc brakes. Any e-bike must have good front sus-pension. Safety is at stake because a simple curved road or a hole (on a descent) or even simply cobblestones can cause you to lose control of your bike/e-bike! -The No. 1 rule for everything that involves recharging bat-teries and especially power is slow charging! When you quickly charge a battery (even a smartphone), it heats up and sometimes becomes very hot. This heat means that you wear out (damage) the battery irreversibly. When charging slowly, the battery will be barely warm if at all. As we recharge when we sleep (often at night), we do not need to charge quickly because there is also a significant risk of explosion and fire.- Electronic gear control means that if your battery is empty, you will no longer be able to change gears! Another pointless stupidity. We are approaching a time when high-tech bikes are designed to generate costly maintenance breakdowns. Disc brakes are a very powerful lobby with its false propaganda which has almost put an end to rim brakes and drum brakes, which remain the best and most durable systems.

      Dude, you're seeing problems everywhere and for no reason. I have an e-bike with disc brakes, regular chain and derailleur from Deore. I have a 625 Wh battery and a 500 Wh as backup. Tires are from Schwalbe with medium puncture protection (Racing Ray and Thunder Burt). I have NEVER had a problem with the bike, not even a flat, and I am bikepacking the most remote mountains and forests in Norway and Sweden. Clean your bike, keep it lubricated and monitor air pressure regularly. Most importantly, avoid overloading (use a trailer instead) and cycle SLOWLY over bumps and potholes. Take your bike to a bikeshop for a full maintenance service two times a year.

      I am sure you mean well. I am curiousike where you are getting your information. As a bike mechanic most of what you said does not make any sense. The proper disc breaks on an ebike work just fine and are superior to Rim breaks. Front suspension is a personal preference. According to Pinion, when the power runs out, there is enough residual power for 1000 shifts. FYI. The torque to the pedals is 85Nm (most urban ebikes are 40 to 60 Nm) As to battery fires. The majority have been caused when people use the wrong charger to the bike battery. One thing that many people aren't aware of, is that the rear wheel spokes tend to loosen (added torque) over time. Other than that just regular maintence . I am guessing from your statements you have not actually tried riding an ebike. They are quite a bit of fun and get more people out.

      What non-sense you are talking about? I'm on a one year bike touring trip from China to the Netherlands. My bike has disc brakes. so do most long distance cyclists I met so far. Typing this from Bukhara, Uzbekistan. If you like rim brakes or drum brakes, fine. But don't soread rubbish as if only you know everything.
